Dear Stanleans, Google Email is for Everyone!

 

You might remember that we promised to have your StanMed.net Email account ( This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ) powered by Google. This is now going to happen very soon - this will be your Christmas / New Year / Pongal gift from StanMed.net. Please read on to find out more about how to get an email account or how to migrate your email account to the new service.

Google provides free email accounts to other organizations as a courtesy and as a way of testing ("beta testing") their service. When we applied for Google third party email service, we had applied for and received 300 accounts. But our current StanMed.net email service has more than 300 users. So, we couldn't move our email service, since we will have to completely turn off our current email service (provided by Everyone.net) before we can start using the service provided by Google.

 

We had applied to Google to increase the number of accounts we need. Google has graciously increased the number of accounts to 1,000. This means we can move all the email accounts from our current email service to the new one powered by Google. We will move current accounts as the first phase. Your email address will remain the same ( This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ) and can be accessed at the same address (http://mail.stanmed.net) but the new service provider will be Google, instead of Everyone.net who is the current email service provider.

 

When the email accounts are moved to the new service, we will email the new passwords to your current This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it email address. You can access your old emails (including the new password notification) on the old email service at the new address (http://oldmail.stanmed.net) - your username and password for this will remain unchanged. Your old email messages cannot be moved over to the new service, but you can access them at the old email service. Please note that this applies only to those who have @stanmed.net email addresses, and not those have only registered at www.stanmed.net with a non stanmed.net email address. 

 

Once the existing email accounts are migrated, we will perform a clean up of email accounts. Due to the way the current email service is structured, several non-Stanleans have created email accounts, including some spammers. We will contact these users, and delete the non-responsive email accounts. 

 

After this is completed (before New Year), we will accept requests for new members to create email accounts. So, new members will have their email accounts ( This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ) before Pongal. Please note that we can provide only one email account per user at the moment. If Google provides us more accounts in the future, we might be able to provide extra accounts for existing users.

 

The advantages of this Google-powered service include larger email storage (2GB per account), a more user-friendly interface, state-of-the-art Google's server's and technology, Google Talk (text and voice chat) and Google Calendar. We will also have access to some of Google's new services as they become available.
