Welcome to the new Stanley Medical College Network. Since its inception in 1999, this website has undergone several incarnations. This is the fourth, and the biggest redesign of StanMed.net. This website brings several new features that were not available before -- including a member listing and ability to search by the year in which they joined SMC, department, etc., post news in various sections, send private messages to other members, a photo gallery and so on. Read the rest of this article to find out what features are available on this website.
The following features are available on the new StanMed.net website: - Registration
- Members can register either with their real names or anonymously. We want to allow this dual mechanism, since using the real names will allow building a good online community, but anonymity will also help users to voice their constructive criticism which they otherwise may not, if they are currently students/staff/faculty at the college or the hospitals.
- Most data collected during registration are not revealed to anyone else. This data is strictly confidential, and help us to better organize the user groups, verify if the members are indeed those they claim to be, allow access to certain areas of the website or forums which may be restricted to a specific class or group, etc. Only the site administrator and the group moderator will be able to see some of these details.
- Member Profiles
- All members can create a brief profile with information about them that help other members to find out about long lost friends, or for networking. Members may choose to show as little or as much information on their profile as they wish.
- Your profile is accessible by clicking on the "My Profile" link on the right hand side below the "Log out" button after you log in.
- Member (including Alumni) Search
- You can use this feature to find other members on this website. You can search by the year in which they joined SMC, the department they worked in, their PG specialty, and several other criteria. You can also search by the name of the person you are looking for. Naturally, our anonymous members will be excluded from these searches.
- Discussion Forums
- Several discussion forums are available, and are organized into various subjects, target audience, etc. Please feel free to start new discussions ("threads") or post replies ("posts") to existing discussions.
- You can also edit your forum options (forum signature, avatar, etc) by clicking on "Forum Options" at the top of the Forum page, after you log in.
- Several private forums are available as well. These are limited to specific groups, based on your MBBS class, departments, etc. You may request membership to any of these forums by clicking on "Usergroups" at the top of the Forum page after you log in, and select a group that you wish to join. The group's moderator will contact you to authenticate your request.
- Private Messages
- StanMed.net now allows you to send a private message to any other registered member. You can access this feature by :
- If you are in the main area of the site, click the link above the Logout button on the right side which says "You have (no/1/etc) private messages" after you log in.
- If you are in the discussion forums, click on the "Private Messages" at the top of the page, after you log in.
- The above two links will change to reflect how many new, unread private messages you have.
- You can read and reply to any of your private messages. You can also send a private message to any member from their profile page (using the "Private Message" or "Quick Message" options).
- If you do not wish to receive Private Messages from a specific member, you may block him/her. You will not receive any more messages from a blocked member. The blocked member will not know that you have blocked him/her.
This page will be updated soon to explain the rest of the features on StanMed.net. Please check back for updates. Thanks very much once again, for your continued support through our (server's) ups and downs over the past few years. Senthil Kumar Nachimuthu. StanMed.net Administrator and Webmaster. |
